Nautical Institute Recognises Kilo’s VASCO BRM Refresher Programme for CPD

A major step forward in advancing maritime competence has been achieved. The Nautical Institute has officially recognised Kilo Solutions’ VASCO Bridge Resource Management (BRM) Refresher Programme for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) — marking a significant milestone in the evolution of professional maritime training.

Redefining BRM Refresher Training

The VASCO BRM Refresher Programme combines operational credibility with cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology to deliver a measurable and deployable solution. Designed and led by operationally current Master Mariners, the programme places participants within a fully immersive bridge environment — offering a true-to-life experience of ship handling, team communication, and decision-making under pressure.

This unique approach bridges the gap between certification and real-world competence. Participants engage in authentic, scenario-based exercises that focus on:

⚓ Effective bridge communication and team dynamics

⚓ Situational awareness and navigational decision-making

⚓ Risk management and emergency procedures

⚓ Continuous assessment and constructive debriefing

Every session includes structured pre-briefs, live mentoring, and formal debriefs aligned with recognised BRM standards. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of achievement and clear evidence of professional development.

Recognition from The Nautical Institute

The Nautical Institute’s endorsement validates Kilo’s ongoing commitment to credible, measurable, and accessible maritime training. Recognition under the CPD scheme confirms that the VASCO BRM Refresher Programme meets the Institute’s rigorous standards for quality, educational value, and professional relevance.

“This recognition from The Nautical Institute marks a pivotal moment in maritime education and training,” said Andy Parkin, Managing Director at Kilo Solutions.  “It validates VR as a powerful complementary tool to traditional fixed simulators, expanding access and consistency in seafarer development worldwide.”

The certification remains valid for 12 months, during which maritime organisations, training providers, and individuals can confidently integrate the programme into their CPD frameworks — knowing it supports both competence assurance and operational readiness

The Power of VASCO

At the core of the programme is VASCO — Kilo’s fully untethered VR bridge simulator that brings realistic maritime training to any location with a Wi-Fi connection. It allows bridge teams to operate collaboratively in real time, whether onboard, in port, or ashore, with coaching and evaluation delivered remotely by Kilo’s Master Mariners.

This approach reduces downtime, eliminates travel, and ensures consistent standards of evaluation across teams and fleets. The result: crews who are more capable, confident, and ready for the operational challenges of modern maritime environments.

Continuous Professional Development — Without Boundaries

In a fast-evolving industry where competence must be maintained, not assumed, the Nautical Institute’s recognition of Kilo’s BRM Refresher Programme underscores the growing importance of continuous, flexible, and technology-led training.

Whether for shipping companies, training academies, or naval institutions, VASCO’s immersive training environments deliver real-world bridge simulation without geographical limits — transforming how professional standards are developed and sustained.
