Maritime Evacuation System (MES)

We develop advanced VR training environments for Marine Evacuation Systems.  Each is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience for ship teams to continually develop safety-critical skills at a regularity that is unachievable via traditional methods.

What is MES?

MES is a state-of-the-art VR training application, accessible through Meta Quest 2 or 3 headsets. It is meticulously designed to replicate the systems, processes, and experience of deploying an evacuation system and evacuating a ship. The simulation includes realistic components such as levers, switches, equipment, slides, rafts, and more.

Attention to detail is a key feature of MES. Users can observe the smooth operation of levers, experience tactile feedback from interactions, and see the deployment sledge move into the water. This immersive training environment enhances students' understanding of the equipment and procedures, better preparing them for real-world emergency scenarios

Why was MES built?

MES was developed to provide practical experience in deploying an evacuation system, typically a costly training experience. Simply relaying a procedure is often insufficient for retention; practice is key. Virtual Reality (VR) training offers an innovative solution by allowing users to engage physically with the learning process.

Through VR training, users can practise a variety of basic actions in a replicable and safe environment. These repeated actions, which can include navigating environments, performing physical tasks, or contributing to resolving overarching issues, can be honed over time.

This hands-on, immersive approach helps users achieve their learning objectives more effectively.

How is MES designed to be used?

MES is an instructor-led learning tool designed to facilitate collaborative learning experiences. It enables multiple students and an instructor to convene in a virtual game room.

Within this environment, students are tasked with deploying the evacuation system and cutting the rafts away. Throughout the exercise, the instructor provides guidance, corrections, and leadership, ensuring a comprehensive and effective learning process for all participants.
